I don't know.
Wood-carver selling his carvings on the main street in Zakopane.
Some other poor fool preparing to be mocked.
On a previous page, I showed bottled water with a picture of a baby, and said that "babies and babes" sell products. I rest my case.
On the train through Slovakia. The field is much greener than in the photo. I think it may be the winter wheat crop that makes the color.
This one has a story. Once again we are at McDonalds, this time in Bratislava, Slovakia. I (Janet) go back to the counter to order my second McChicken Sandwich, fully intending to pick it apart in search of digestible chicken. I notice a commotion at the counter. A young man with a shaved head and dancing eyes is asking the strangest questions to the McDonalds' staff. "Please, can you read to me the menu? I would like you to read me the menu in English. Wait! Do you speak Russian? Oh, then English please." Note: there is a huge menu in English above the counter. After he finally orders his food he leans across the counter and stares into the young McClerk's eyes. "Do you what tonight is? Do you KNOW what tonight is?" His intensity made her uneasy. "Uh, Saturday," she responds. "NO! Not Saturday. Tonight the biggest event in history! Do you know?" (It was at this point I realize he was probably not crazy, but an attention-seeker, possibly a performance artist.) He kept asking if she knew what day it was - milking the suspsense. Since I was eavesdropping, and not a part of the conversation, I had to restrain myself from shouting "So then, WHAT day is it?" That was very difficult for someone of the Janet variety.
He looked at his watch and finally answered. "In about 47 minutes the Canada Cup will begin. Do you watch hockey?"
At this point I took my McChicken Sandwich and walked back to the 'dining area'. As soon as I got back to the table I told Daniel about the free entertainment. By the time he got there the young man was asking for "special deals" on the hamburgers.
Just when we thought the show was over, Performance Man left Micky D's with his tray and stood outside the big glass windows. (there was no outdoor seating). He ate standing up in 40 degree weather, holding his tray. A McStaff member had to go out and retrieve the tray from him, as his eating spot kept moving out towards the street.
That was our first night in Bratislava. We would have missed this whole thing if the vegan restaurant was open late.
I think this is part of the old outer castle wall of the Bratislava castle.
On the way to Bratislava castle.
As far as I can tell, that long bone there is a human femur. This shot is beside a path near a construction site under the Bratislava castle. It looked like they unearthed the human bones while digging the walkway to their new luxury apartment complex, and then left them there. They were lying out in the open, and it looked like some dogs dragged them along to the garbage pile nearby. They were still there the next day.
The run-down, locked-up church near the path with the bones. Maybe they are digging up the church cemetery and putting apartments there? Haven't they seen "Poltergeist"?
A construction worker near the dug-up graveyard sleeping on the job. We were told that eastern european construction workers have kept up the proud tradition of the communist work ethic.
He thinks he takes a sneaky shot, but not half as sneaky as me.
Night shot in Bratislava with the Bratislava castle in the background. I'm currently reading "The Castle" by Kafka, about a man desparately trying to reach a castle full of beauracrats. He can see the castle, but no matter how far he walks he never seems to get any closer to the castle. Bratislava castle is like that.
